Is my Lapland Holiday protected ?

  • ABTA, ATOL, IATA, TTA ?  What do all these mean ?
  • Will my money be safe if the "holiday company goes bust" ?
  • Do I care about protection ?
Did you know that you are only protected if you book a package ? ie if you book a flight and hotel separately on the internet you have no financial protection under ATOL / ABTA ?
ABTA protection covers the eventuality of a failure of a travel agent.  ATOL protection covers the failure of the tour operator, or the foreign suppliers
There has been a lot of discussion in the holiday industry as to the definition of a "package", and the debate has been raging for many years, culminating in a recent Court of Appeal decision on the matter.
Basically if you purchase a flight and accommodation at the same time this will be a package, and as such should be covered by the ATOL of the Tour Operator.  If you purchase a flight and accommodation separately it is highly likely that you will not be covered by ATOL, and your money could be at risk.
